Which water softener do I need?
If you have a VENTED plumbing system with a loft tank you may need two units. One to go somewhere on the rising main and the other on the cold down service to the hot water cylinder. (Look at the diagrams to see which you have). This is because there is a break in the water flow where the water drops into the header tank and the conditioning effect of the unit cannot jump this break in the water. So if you want to treat the whole house you may need two units. OR..if your rising main and cold down pipe runs in parallel in the airing cupboard (which they often do) you can use an LP2, which has two aerials and can therefore treat both pipes.
If however you use a lot of water from your header tank as say would a family of four, then you can get away with just one unit fitted anywhere on the rising main since the conditioning effect of the water remains for about 5-6 hours in the header tank.
If you are in any doubt the best treatment is to have TWO units.
If you have a direct or UNVENTED system with a combination boiler (which most modern houses have) then you will only need ONE unit depending on the size of house. If your Combination Boiler is some distance from where you fit your first unit you can fit a second DEDICATED unit to protect the boiler.
